In Kończyce, this year's harvest celebration carries an added meaning as residents mark 250 years of the district's history together.
On Saturday, 29 August 2026, Kończyce in Zabrze will combine the traditional celebration of the harvest with a milestone for the district itself. The Festyn Dożynkowy begins at 3:00 p.m. at the Dzielnicowy Ośrodek Kultury on ul. Dorotki 3, bringing together music, local traditions, family activities and a programme marking Kończyce's 250th anniversary.
The anniversary has already been a significant theme in the district this year. Its official celebrations began in March at the Dzielnicowy Ośrodek Kultury, where a commemorative logo designed by Prof. Marian Oslislo was presented alongside a mural project and anniversary postcards.
The August festival continues those celebrations in a more informal setting, connecting the history of the district with one of the most familiar forms of community gathering: the harvest festival.
A district celebrating its past while looking ahead
The 250th anniversary provides a particular context for this year's dożynki. Kończyce has been described in local anniversary coverage as a district with a strong sense of community, while also changing as new residents arrive and new buildings appear alongside older parts of the neighbourhood.
That combination of continuity and change is reflected in the anniversary programme itself. Earlier this year, students from the Liceum Sztuk Plastycznych in Zabrze took part in a plein-air painting project portraying Kończyce, including its streets, public spaces and the area around the DOK. The project was intended to capture the district as it looks today during its anniversary year.
The harvest festival approaches the same anniversary from a different direction. Rather than looking at Kończyce through an exhibition or artistic project, it brings people together in the district itself.
The programme begins with the official opening at 3:00 p.m., followed by the presentation of awards in the competition for the most beautiful allotment garden. The involvement of the ROD "Wiśnia" allotment community places local gardening and cultivation directly within the day's harvest theme.
History becomes part of the afternoon
One of the more distinctive elements of the programme is the opportunity to explore Kończyce with historian Dariusz Walerjański. Guided rides in electric vehicles will take participants around the district, with stories and historical anecdotes connected with its 250-year past.
The historical element is not confined to the anniversary itself. A further event at the DOK on Sunday, 30 August, will see Walerjański give a talk about Czarniawka as part of the 250th-anniversary programme.
On Saturday, however, history sits alongside a distinctly contemporary community festival.
At 4:00 p.m., the Mażoretki Carnall Zabrze will perform alongside the Orkiestra Dęta "Sośnicowice". Later, at 6:30 p.m., the programme moves towards cabaret and regional performance with Zespół Antyki and Pan Babcia.
For younger visitors, the afternoon includes children's animations, large inflatables, a foam party and a festival of coloured powders. Food stalls, popcorn, cotton candy, local products and a 360-degree photo booth add further elements to the event.
There is also a practical community element. Straż Miejska in Zabrze will offer free preventive bicycle marking for residents who wish to take part. Visitors are advised to bring identification for this service.
The evening continues with a prize draw at 7:30 p.m., followed by an outdoor community dance from 8:00 p.m. with DJ Artur. The event is scheduled to conclude at 10:00 p.m.
A celebration shaped by the people who live there
The range of organisations involved is itself a reflection of the community focus. The event is being organised with the Dzielnicowy Ośrodek Kultury in Kończyce, ROD "Wiśnia", the Kończyce District Council, OSP Kończyce and Miejski Ośrodek Kultury in Zabrze.
That cooperation gives the festival a character that extends beyond a single cultural programme. The dożynki bring together local organisations, residents, families, performers and community groups, while the 250th anniversary provides the historical thread connecting them.
For a district marking 250 years, that may be the most fitting way to celebrate. Kończyce's history is not being presented only as something to look back on. It is being marked through the people, traditions and everyday community life that continue to shape the district today.
